History Of John Wesley United Methodist Church
Methodists first organized in Falmouth in 1811.  The first meetinghouse was on East Main Street near the present Police station until 1829, when it was moved up Main Street to a site opposite Peg Noonan Park, near the present Elm Arch Inn. This meeting house served until 1847, when it was replaced with a larger facility on the same site.  In 1956, with evidence that their building was deteriorating badly, church members voted to sell their property and build a new church on Gifford Street at the corner of Jones Road, the John Wesley Church. The contemporary-style building, completed on 1958, includes elements of the Main Street church, most notably the beautiful large wooden cross which hangs in the window above the altar. This cross, and another smaller one in the chapel, were built from the beams of the 1848 structure.
John Wesley Church draws its lineage from several Methodist groups.  Originally the Methodist society of Falmouth and Sandwich, the congregation merged in 1935 with the East Falmouth Methodist Episcopal Church.. In 1958 John Wesley was part of the Falmouth Methodist Parish, including West Falmouth Methodist Church and Woods Hole Methodist Church, sharing a pastor and common administration. Today the Woods Hole Methodist Church is no longer open, and John Wesley and the West Falmouth churches have their own administrations and pastorates.
